More than three decades after Khal Nayak redefined Bollywood’s anti-hero, Sanjay Dutt is set to revive his iconic character Ballu. The actor on Friday officially announced Khalnayak Returns, positioning it as a new-age take on the 1993 cult classic.
Khal Nayak sequel announced by Dutt
The announcement was made at an event in Mumbai, where Sanjay revealed that his production house, Three Dimension Motion Pictures, has partnered with producer Aksha Kamboj’s Aspect Entertainment to acquire the rights from filmmaker Subhash Ghai and Mukta Arts.
A short teaser, shown at the event, offered a glimpse of Dutt stepping back into Ballu’s shoes—this time in a grittier, more intense avatar.
The original film featured a stellar cast including Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit, and went on to become one of the defining films of the 1990s.

Speaking at the event, Sanjay acknowledged Subhash Ghai’s role in shaping the franchise. “Without Subhash ji, Khalnayak wouldn’t have existed. He is a legend and will continue to be part of this journey,” he said.
A sequel shaped during prison years
In a candid revelation, the actor shared that the idea for Khalnayak Returns dates back to his time in prison in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.
Sanjay recalled informally polling fellow inmates about the possibility of a sequel. Encouraged by their response, he asked thousands of them to write their thoughts on it. The exercise, he said, resulted in nearly 4,000 written pages that he later went through himself.
Once out, he took the concept to Subhash Ghai, who supported the idea and encouraged its development.
Ghai, who attended the launch event, described the project as a deeply personal one for Sanjay and his wife Maanyata, expressing optimism about its future.

What to expect from ‘Khalnayak Returns’
While the announcement has sparked excitement, key details about the film remain tightly guarded. It is not yet clear whether the project will continue the original storyline or reinterpret it for a new generation.
The script is currently under development, with the makers choosing to keep the narrative direction under wraps for now.
