For years, the story of Bobby Deol missing out on Jab We Met has remained one of Bollywood’s most talked-about casting twists. Now, the actor has revisited that painful chapter, revealing how the disappointment of losing the film eventually became one of the biggest learning experiences of his life.

Speaking ahead of the release of Anurag Kashyap's upcoming film Bandar, Bobby reflected on a period when his career was struggling and opportunities were becoming increasingly difficult to find. During that phase, he believed Jab We Met could have been the film that changed everything for him.

The film Bobby helped put together

According to Bobby, he was instrumental in bringing director Imtiaz Ali and actress Kareena Kapoor together for the project. He had been impressed by Imtiaz's debut film Socha Na Tha and was eager to collaborate with him on a new story.

According to The Indian Express, however, after spending considerable time trying to get the project off the ground, Bobby eventually found himself replaced by Shahid Kapoor in what would become one of Bollywood's most celebrated romantic dramas, Jab We Met.

Recalling the episode, Bobby admitted that the decision left him deeply hurt because he felt he needed a film like that at a crucial stage of his career. He said watching the project move forward with the same director and leading lady but without him was difficult to accept.

Turning disappointment into motivation

According to The Indian Express, despite the heartbreak, Bobby says he chose not to remain bitter. Instead, he channelled his frustration into self-improvement.

The actor explained that the anger and disappointment he experienced during those years became a source of motivation. Rather than dwelling on setbacks, he focused on working on himself and becoming stronger both personally and professionally.

According to Bobby, the challenges he faced ultimately helped shape him into a better actor and a more resilient individual.

Different versions of the same story

According to The Indian Express, while Bobby has often spoken about feeling hurt by the outcome, Imtiaz Ali has previously offered a different perspective. The filmmaker stated that he waited several years for the project to begin but eventually decided to move ahead because prolonged delays were affecting him financially.

Today, however, there appears to be no lingering bitterness between the two. Bobby has repeatedly emphasised that he holds no grudges and continues to admire Imtiaz's work.

Looking back, the actor sees the missed opportunity not as a defeat, but as a defining moment that eventually led him to the career resurgence he enjoys today through projects such as Animal, Aashram and the upcoming Bandar.
