Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has candidly opened up about the disappointing reception of Love Aaj Kal, admitting that the film did not turn out the way he had envisioned. The director described the project as a “useless experiment” while reflecting on why the film failed to resonate with audiences despite carrying the legacy of one of Bollywood’s most loved romantic dramas.

Released in 2020, Love Aaj Kal starred Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan in lead roles. The film was positioned as a spiritual successor to Imtiaz Ali’s 2009 hit of the same name, which featured Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. However, unlike the original film, the sequel struggled both critically and commercially after its release.

Imtiaz Ali reflects on the film’s failure

In a recent interaction, Imtiaz Ali admitted that the film may not have been a viable project from the very beginning. The filmmaker explained that while the intention behind the movie was genuine, the emotional core of the story failed to strike a chord with viewers.

According to reports of Hindustan Times, the director acknowledged that not every creative experiment succeeds and said Love Aaj Kal 2 became an example of a concept that failed in execution. He reportedly suggested that the storytelling and emotional depth did not connect with audiences in the same way as his earlier romantic dramas.

The filmmaker’s remarks have sparked renewed discussions online, especially among fans who continue to debate whether the movie was misunderstood or simply unable to live up to expectations.

Why the sequel struggled with audiences

One of the biggest reasons behind the criticism was the inevitable comparison with the original 2009 film. The first Love Aaj Kal became popular for its modern yet emotionally relatable portrayal of relationships, backed by memorable performances and a strong soundtrack.

In contrast, the 2020 version received mixed-to-negative reviews upon release. Many viewers criticised the screenplay, dialogues, and character development, saying the emotional journey felt forced and difficult to relate to. Several scenes and dialogues from the film later went viral online as memes, further impacting the film’s public perception.

According to the reports of Hindustan Times, despite the criticism, the soundtrack composed by Pritam found appreciation among music lovers. Songs from the album continued trending on streaming platforms even after the film left theatres.

The chemistry between Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan also became a major talking point during the film’s promotional campaign, especially because of rumours surrounding their off-screen relationship at the time.

Imtiaz Ali’s legacy in Bollywood romance

Even though Love Aaj Kal 2 did not succeed, Imtiaz Ali remains one of Bollywood’s most influential filmmakers in the romance genre. Over the years, he has directed critically acclaimed films like Jab We Met, Rockstar, Highway, and Tamasha, all of which developed cult fan followings over time.

His films are often praised for exploring themes of identity, love, heartbreak, and self-discovery through emotionally layered storytelling. Because of this legacy, expectations surrounding Love Aaj Kal 2 were exceptionally high from the beginning.

Fans react to Imtiaz Ali’s remarks

Many X users reacted strongly after Imtiaz Ali’s recent comments surfaced online. While many appreciated the filmmaker’s honesty and self-awareness, others defended the movie and argued that it deserved more appreciation than it initially received.

Some fans said the film may have been released at the wrong time, while others felt the expectations attached to the original film made it difficult for the sequel to stand independently. A section of viewers also pointed out that the film has gradually gained a niche audience among younger viewers.

Despite the criticism surrounding Love Aaj Kal 2, Imtiaz Ali’s willingness to openly discuss the film’s shortcomings has once again highlighted his reputation as one of Bollywood’s most introspective directors.
