In yet another new feature, one of the world's most popular music streaming platforms in the world, Spotify now allows its users to share and see what others are listening to in real-time.

Dubbed as the 'listening activity', this is an opt-in feature that is visible to only your friends and family you have already connected with on 'Messages'. This feature lets you see the activities of others even if you have not turned on your own activity as long as the other people have opted for it.

How does it work?

The listening activity can be turned on via privacy and social settings which is available through the side drawer next to the 'view profile' button. Once this is enabled, activity appears in the chat row of the side drawer and also at the top of messages chats.

If a user taps on anyone's listening activity, they will be able to add tracks to their own library, start playback, open the track's context menu or even react with emojis.

"Listening activity is only shared with people you’ve already messaged on Spotify, and you’re always in control—only the contacts you choose can see your activity, and you can turn it off at any time," reads the statement on Spotify.

Another activity added

The Swedish company also has another activity 'Request to Jam' to complement the listening activity. This is a new way for users to invite friends or family they're connected with in messages to a live listening session.

This feature is available for premium users and has crossed 100 million monthly listening hours as of August 25, 2025.

For this feature, the users can tap 'Jam' in the top right corner to send a request for a remote jam session. Once the request is received and accepted by the user on the other end, the recipient becomes the host of the jam session. Now, both the users can add tracks and listen to their favourite tracks together.
