The makers of Dune: Part Three have unveiled the first look posters of the much-anticipated sequel, offering fans a glimpse of the expanded cast and confirming key character returns.
The posters introduce Robert Pattinson to the franchise while also confirming the return of Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho.
According to reports surrounding the film’s casting, Pattinson is expected to play Scytale, a shapeshifting antagonist from Dune Messiah, the novel that forms the basis of the third film. Momoa’s return is notable because his character Duncan Idaho died during the events of Dune, though the Dune universe has long explored ways to bring the character back into the story.
Returning cast set for larger roles
The new posters also confirm the return of several major characters from the earlier films.
Among them are Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, and Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan.
Here’s a first look at the posters:
Their presence in the posters suggests that several characters will have larger roles than they did in the earlier instalments.
Alia Atreides, who appeared briefly in Dune: Part Two through a vision experienced by Paul Atreides, appears in the new artwork with a dramatic, blood-splattered look, hinting at the character’s darker arc.
Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh, is also expected to take on a more prominent role as the story progresses.
Story moves forward with time jump
The upcoming film continues the saga of Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet, who has now firmly established himself as Emperor.
The story takes place around 12 years after the events of Dune: Part Two and adapts the narrative of Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, which explores the consequences of Paul’s rule and the shifting political alliances within the universe.
Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve returns to direct the third instalment after the critical and commercial success of the previous films. The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on December 18. Trailer drops tomorrow.
