The Academy Awards, or the Oscars, is the most prominent celebration of cinema in Hollywood. While the event is famous for its glamour, presence of celebrities, and inspiring speeches, one aspect that goes unseen is the massive expense incurred in organizing the event.

The cost of organizing the Oscars is estimated to be around $56.9 million, or approximately ₹477 crores, according to data cited in a report published by WalletHub, a financial information portal. Every year, the event takes place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where thousands of people attend the event, and millions of others watch the event unfold on television.

Security, red carpet and television production drive costs

A large part of the budget also goes into the making of the live telecast, which is broadcast worldwide. There are also other events that take place in association with the ceremony, like the nominees' luncheon, the Governors Awards, and the Governors Ball, which is the after-party of the Oscars ceremony.

The red carpet, which is one of the most iconic aspects of the Academy Awards, also carries its own price tag. Reports have suggested that it takes 30 rolls of fabric and an 18-member crew, who work for nearly 600 hours, to prepare the area. The cost of laying out the red carpet itself is around $24,700 (approximately 20 lakhs).

Security measures are also an additional cost. With some of the biggest celebrities in the world attending the event, the authorities take no chances with the security of the venue. A report has suggested that the Los Angeles Police Department puts up a security perimeter around the venue, which includes SWAT teams and bomb squads. This costs around $250,000 (approximately 2.3 crores).

Security measures were reportedly strengthened this year amid global tensions involving Iran and recent incidents in the United States.

From Oscar trophies to celebrity host

Even smaller details of the ceremony add up to the expense. The Oscar statuettes are gold-plated with 24-carat gold, which costs around $400 (approximately ₹37,000) to make. Even though they are so coveted, the Academy Awards statuettes can be sold back to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for only $1, according to Academy Awards rules, which are awarded to the winner.

Hosting the Awards also comes with a price tag. This year, comedian Conan O'Brien returned as the host of the Academy Awards. Estimates indicate that the host of the Oscars receives around $15,000, which was previously revealed by past host Jimmy Kimmel in interviews.

Luxury dinners and the famous Oscars gift bag

After the awards ceremony, guests attend the Governors Ball, where the menu is curated by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck. The event features a large culinary team, with dozens of chefs preparing gourmet dishes for attendees.

Another well-known feature of the ceremony is the “Everybody Wins” gift bag given to nominees in major categories and the host. Curated by the marketing firm Distinctive Assets, each bag is valued at about $350,000. The packages include luxury holidays, wellness retreats, cosmetic treatments, designer products and high-end travel experiences.

Celebrities also spend heavily on their red-carpet appearances. According to media reports, an A-list star’s outfit, jewellery and styling can cost several million dollars.

A costly show that brings huge revenue

Despite the high production cost, the Oscars generate substantial financial returns. A 30-second advertising slot during the live broadcast can cost more than $2 million, according to entertainment industry reports. The ceremony also provides a boost to the local economy, with estimates suggesting that it generates around $170 million in economic impact for Los Angeles each year.

Winning an Oscar can also influence careers and box office results. Films that win Best Picture often see a surge in ticket sales, while actors who receive top awards frequently command higher salaries for future projects.
