Oscars 2026: Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar missing from In Memoriam segment sparks criticism in India

Dharmendra and Manoj Kumar were added to the Academy’s In Memoriam webpage after their absence from the Oscars 2026 broadcast tribute segment.

The 98th Academy Awards drew criticism from some viewers in India after veteran actors Dharmendra and Manoj Kumar were not featured in the In Memoriam segment during the live broadcast.

Hours after the ceremony, both actors appeared on the official In Memoriam page of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences website, which lists film personalities who died over the past year.

The tribute page includes more than 300 names from across the global film industry, including actors, directors, producers and screenwriters.

Indian cinema figures included on Academy website

Along with Dharmendra and Manoj Kumar, veteran actor B. Saroja Devi was also featured on the Academy’s online memorial list.

Saroja Devi appeared in more than 200 films across Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi cinema and was widely regarded as one of the pioneering female stars of Kannada cinema. She died at her residence in Bengaluru in July last year at the age of 87.

Veteran Telugu actor and former politician Kota Srinivasa Rao was also included in the memorial listing. The online tribute also named several Hollywood figures, including actors James Van Der Beek and Eric Dane, among others remembered by the Academy.



Emotional tributes during the ceremony

During the ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the In Memoriam segment honoured several prominent figures from Hollywood who died in the past year. The tribute included names such as Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton.

Actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner and producer Michele Reiner were remembered with a special tribute introduced by comedian Billy Crystal.

Actress Rachel McAdams also paid tribute to Diane Keaton and fellow Canadian actor Catherine O’Hara, while singer and actor Barbra Streisand performed “The Way We Were” in memory of Robert Redford. The ceremony was hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, who returned as host for the second consecutive year.
