Latin pop superstar Shakira performed a record-breaking show at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, drawing an estimated two million fans.

Latin pop queen Shakira kicked off her free mega-concert on Rio’s famed Copacabana beach under a full moon on Saturday, with drones forming the image of a she-wolf—her nickname—overhead as she took the stage over an hour late.

About two million people were expected to attend the free outdoor concert by the 49-year-old Colombian superstar, who performed on a massive stage outside the legendary Copacabana Hotel. This beach has hosted major global pop stars in recent years, with Madonna performing for 1.6 million people in 2024 and Lady Gaga entertaining 2.1 million fans last year.

Massive crowd and star power

Shakira’s performance attracted one of the largest crowds ever seen at Copacabana Beach. The area has previously hosted global artists like Madonna and Lady Gaga, who also drew millions of fans for their shows.

"Shakira doesn't need to fit into moulds, she makes real art, she does what she wants out of love. I'm very inspired by her, she's a Latin woman at the top," 26-year-old designer Joao Pedro Yellin told AFP who was dressed in an overcoat made of scraps representing Latin American flags.

Superfan attendance and global appeal

Fans travelled from different countries to attend the concert, with many camping overnight to secure a view.

As per NDTV reports, Graciele Vaz, a long-time fan, said, "I've been a Shakira fan for more than 20 years," the 43-year-old said, sporting a large tattoo on her back of Shakira's name over a she-wolf—the singer's nickname and symbol of her current world tour. With more than 90 million records sold, four Grammys, 15 Latin Grammys and a widely known repertoire including hits like "Hips Don't Lie," "Waka Waka" and "Whenever, Wherever," she enjoys strong popularity in Brazil, where she has performed many times.

She further added, "She loves Brazil so much, and the love she has for us is the love we have for her."

Security, economy and cultural impact

To promote the show, Shakira shared Instagram videos of her packing flip-flops and a Brazilian flag bikini before travelling, along with clips of her walk in Rio near Sugarloaf Mountain. On Friday night, early fans attended a rehearsal with Brazilian musicians Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethania, and she also performed "O Leaozinho" with Veloso.

Rio prepared for the concert for several days, with posters across the city and vendors selling drinks, souvenirs, and items related to her tour.

As per NDTV reports, Security arrangements included nearly 8,000 officers, drones, facial recognition systems, and multiple screening points with metal detectors. City officials estimated the event could generate over $160 million for the local economy, while tourism bookings also increased significantly.

The concert is part of a growing trend of large-scale free public performances in major cities. It recorded massive attendance and involved detailed security planning. The event also had an economic impact and was held in Rio de Janeiro as a major cultural event.
