The FIFA World Cup 2026 has delivered plenty of surprises on the pitch, and the latest player performance rankings have added another twist. While football icons Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland have all impressed during the tournament, none of them currently sit at the top of FIFA’s official performance rankings. Even more striking is Cristiano Ronaldo’s position, with the Portugal captain placed 79th.

Surprise name leads FIFA’s performance chart

Unlike popularity or career-based rankings, FIFA’s World Cup performance list is based solely on players’ displays during the tournament. Every match is assessed using factors such as attacking output, defensive work, passing, chance creation and overall influence on the game.

As a result, a player who has consistently delivered throughout the competition has climbed above some of football’s biggest superstars. Messi, despite leading Argentina into the knockout rounds with another influential campaign, is not the highest-ranked player. Mbappe and Haaland have also been overtaken by players who have enjoyed outstanding tournaments.

The rankings underline FIFA’s emphasis on current form rather than reputation, with several emerging stars making significant progress after standout performances in the group stage.

Ronaldo slips despite historic milestone

Cristiano Ronaldo’s ranking has raised eyebrows after the veteran forward finished 79th in the latest standings. The Portuguese legend has already created history by becoming the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups, but the rankings are based on overall tournament impact rather than individual records.

With the knockout stage now underway, every match carries greater significance and the standings are expected to change quickly. Strong displays in the coming rounds could see Messi, Mbappe, Haaland and Ronaldo climb higher before the tournament concludes.

For now, however, FIFA’s rankings have shown that World Cup performances—not star status or career achievements, are determining who leads the race as the competition heads towards its decisive stages.
