Advanced machine learning simulations and statistical modelling have been used to forecast the likely outcome of the FIFA World Cup 2026. These simulations offered a data-driven assessment of which teams have the strongest chance of lifting football's biggest prize. The predictions were developed after analysing years of match data, player performances, betting markets, and squad valuations.

A machine learning model developed by Professor Achim Zeileis has projected the title contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026 after running 100,000 tournament simulations, NDTV reported.

According to Zeileis, the prediction system combines statistical models, expert assessments, and machine learning tools to evaluate the strength of teams and players before estimating the most likely tournament outcomes.

How the prediction model was built

Explaining the methodology, Zeileis said the process involves two stages.

"In the first, sophisticated statistical models and expert insight from bookmakers and transfer markets are combined to determine the strengths of all teams and their players. In the second step, a machine learning algorithm decides how to best combine the strength estimates with other information about the teams".

The model then simulated the tournament 100,000 times to identify the most probable paths to the title.

Which teams are leading the race?

Based on the simulations, Spain emerged as the favourite to win the tournament with a 14.5% probability.

"We ran the simulation 100,000 times to determine the tournament's most likely course. The results show that Spain is the favourite for the title with a winning probability of 14.5%, closely followed by England and France, each at 12.4%, and Germany at 11.2%".

"Portugal and Argentina also have good chances of winning the title, at 8.9% and 8.2%, respectively".

Zeileis said the model relied on four major variables. These included results of international matches over the past eight years, bookmakers' odds, player ratings based on club and national team performances, and player market values, as reported by NDTV.

He added that player quality and future potential were also factored into the calculations through market-value assessments.
