Assam braces for heavy rain as IMD warns of wet weather across India

IMD places Assam under orange alert as heavy rain and thunderstorms are set to impact multiple regions across India on April 9.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Assam on April 9, warning of heavy rainfall in parts of the state. Similar wet conditions are expected across the northeast, with isolated heavy rainfall likely in Arunachal Pradesh on April 9 and 12, Assam and Meghalaya on April 9 and 10, and Tripura on April 9. Meghalaya may also witness isolated hailstorms during the day.

Several eastern and northern regions are set to experience unsettled weather. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds from April 9 to 12. Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand may see similar conditions on April 9, while Odisha could experience rainfall on April 9 and 10.

In the northern hills, Jammu and Kashmir is expected to witness light to moderate rainfall or snowfall between April 9 and 11, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also likely to see comparable weather activity on April 9.

Central India and temperature trends

Chhattisgarh is forecast to receive scattered rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds on April 9. Across northwest, central and eastern India, day temperatures are expected to remain below normal to near normal over the next three to four days, according to IMD.

Maharashtra is likely to see a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius until April 11, with no significant change expected between April 12 and 14.

Hot and humid conditions in the South

In contrast, southern states are expected to continue experiencing hot and humid weather. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala will remain under such conditions on April 9. Similar weather is forecast for Goa on April 10 and 11, coastal Gujarat between April 11 and 14, Odisha from April 12 to 14, and coastal Karnataka until April 11.

Delhi is likely to witness mainly clear skies as the IMD has lifted its earlier yellow alert. Temperatures will remain below normal, with minimum temperatures between 14C and 16C and maximum temperatures ranging from 30C to 32C.
