World Environment Day, observed every year on June 5, serves as a global call to protect the planet and address pressing environmental challenges. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the annual observance encourages governments, organisations and individuals to take action towards a more sustainable future.
Over the years, the day has evolved into one of the largest international platforms for environmental awareness, bringing together communities across the world through campaigns, events and grassroots initiatives.
How World Environment Day began
The origins of World Environment Day date back to 1972, when the United Nations General Assembly designated June 5 as an annual day for environmental action during the Stockholm Conference. The conference marked the first major global gathering to place environmental protection at the centre of international discussions.

The same year also saw the establishment of UNEP. A year later, in 1973, the first World Environment Day was celebrated under the theme 'Only One Earth'.
Theme for 2026: Climate Action
This year's global campaign focuses on the growing climate crisis and the need for immediate action.
"World Environment Day 2026 focuses on climate change, on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the signals we choose to send back. UNEP's global campaign calls on all of us to step in #NowForClimate, and steer a world already in motion," reads the official website.
The official theme for 2026 is Climate Action, while the campaign message is "Now For Climate".

Too wet. Too dry. Too hot.
But listen, listen again.
Do you hear something else?
This #WorldEnvironmentDay, we turn the volume up on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and how, together, we can act #NowForClimate.

Azerbaijan will host the global observance of World Environment Day 2026 in its capital city, Baku.
The country's campaign is centred on the message āInspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Futureā, highlighting the connection between environmental protection and climate resilience. The initiative focuses on addressing climate change and ecosystem degradation while promoting nature-based solutions for the future.
UN chief highlights climate concerns
Ahead of the observance, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned about the growing environmental challenges facing the world.

"This World Environment Day, warning signals are everywhere. The past 11 years have been the 11 hottest on record. And the damage goes far beyond rising temperatures, from polluted air to degraded land, collapsing ecosystems, and vanishing biodiversity," said Antonio Guterres.
"The world is heading for a temporary overshoot above 1.5 degrees. Every fraction of a degree brings greater harm ā especially to the most vulnerable. Our task is to make that overshoot as small, as short, and as safe as possible ā and rapidly bring temperatures back down."
World Environment Day continues to play a key role in raising awareness and encouraging action on environmental issues. Through public campaigns and community participation, it promotes sustainable practices and highlights the collective responsibility of protecting the planet for future generations.
