A day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal-led Mahagathbandhan suffered a crushing defeat in the Bihar assembly elections, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya announced that she is quitting politics and “disowning” her family. Her abrupt declaration, made public through a post on X, sparked shock across political circles already reeling from the scale of the RJD’s electoral setback.

Taking full responsibility for her decision, Rohini directly targeted Sanjay Yadav, a close confidant of Tejashwi Yadav, along with Rameez, claiming that the two “asked” her to take the step.

“I’m quitting politics and I’m disowning my family… This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do… and I’m taking all the blame,” she wrote on X, indicating clear dissatisfaction with the internal functioning of the party after the defeat.

RJD responds after collapse from 75 to 25 seats

The RJD, reacting for the first time since the verdict, said on Saturday that it is not “despondent” despite suffering one of its worst performances since 2010. From being the largest party in the Mahagathbandhan with 75 seats, the RJD plummeted to 25 seats, marking a dramatic fall that left the alliance far short of government formation.

Overall, the Mahagathbandhan’s combined tally dropped below the 40-seat mark, a severe blow despite having rallied behind Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial candidate. The coalition’s vote share also slid sharply, clearing the path for an overwhelming victory for the ruling NDA.

The NDA finished with a dominant 202 seats, powered by the BJP’s strongest-ever performance in the state. The BJP won 89 seats, its highest tally in Bihar so far. The JD(U), led by Nitish Kumar, followed closely with 85 seats.

Chirag Paswan’s LJP (RV) delivered an impressive strike rate, winning 19 of the 29 seats it contested. HAM bagged 5 seats, while Upendra Kushwaha’s party claimed 4 seats, rounding off the NDA’s sweeping mandate.
