8,000 candidates for 187 vacant posts, exam held on runway under open sky

Around 8,000 candidates appeared for an exam for just 187 Home Guard posts in Odisha’s Sambalpur, with authorities using an under-construction runway as the exam centre due to logistical constraints.

Under the open sky, a runway. Thousands of job seekers are sitting in rows. The scene is from Sambalpur district in Odisha. Everyone has come to take the Home Guard recruitment exam. Only 187 posts. That too contractual jobs. Nearly 8,000 candidates took the exam for those jobs.

The recruitment authorities said that due to the 'excessive' number of job seekers for the exam, it was not possible to organize it in conventional examination centers. They were compelled to use a constructed runway in Jamadarpalita. Candidates had to sit on the runway and take the exam. However, the examination was conducted in an orderly manner.

The Additional Superintendent of Police of Sambalpur said that the exam was held on December 16. Nearly ten thousand applicants had applied for the exam and about eight thousand candidates were present on the exam day. However, for eight thousand candidates, arrangements would have had to be made in about 20 schools. Sambalpur is such a place where several exams are held every Sunday. It becomes difficult to manage such a large number of students together. Generally, written and physical tests for police and army recruitment are held in open fields. He said, 'We had adopted this arrangement to avoid any kind of mismanagement.'

A video was posted on X captioned, "This is about an exam held in Odisha for 187 Home Guard positions. Approximately 8,000-10,000 candidates showed up. This reflects the unemployment situation in the state, where the BJP government is in power."

The educational qualification for recruitment to Home Guard posts was fifth grade. However, it is known that candidates with graduate and post-graduate degrees also participated in this exam. Notably, the state government has planned to construct four new airstrips in western Odisha. This initiative is for improved aviation services. The exam was arranged on the under-construction Jamadarpalita runway among these.
