The Indian government has laid down checks on GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. This comes after concerns about unauthorised sales and off-label use. Authorities are monitoring pharmacies, wholesalers, and wellness clinics. The aim is to ensure these drugs are used safely.
Officials want to prevent misuse and protect public health. Regulators are conducting inspections and audits across the country.
Authorities warn of serious health risks from misuse
As many generic GLP-1 drugs are now available, officials are worried they are too easy to get. The Health Ministry was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times, “The regulator emphasises that patient safety remains paramount. The misuse of weight-loss drugs without clinical oversight can lead to severe health complications. Citizens are advised to use such medications only under the guidance of qualified medical practitioners.”
Regulators take strong action to ensure safe use
The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) and state regulators have increased checks and inspections. A March 10 advisory banned any misleading ads or promotions.
Recently, 49 places, including online pharmacies, wholesalers, retailers, and wellness clinics were inspected. Notices have been sent to those who have been found breaking the rules.

Strict consequences for violations
Authorities emphasised on the fact that GLP-1 drugs are approved in India only under endocrinologists, internal medicine specialists, and, for some cases, cardiologists. Regulatory surveillance and checks will continue, and anyone breaking the rules may lose their license, face fines, or be taken to court.
These strict actions are meant to stop misuse of weight-loss drugs. It aims to keep patients safe and healthy. The drugs should only be used under a doctor’s guidance. Authorities want people to use them safely.
