Harsh Singh and his wife, Ruby Jain, came under intense scrutiny after a video surfaced showing them hurling racist and derogatory remarks at three Northeastern women in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. The footage, which quickly went viral, triggered widespread outrage and renewed concerns over racial discrimination faced by people from the Northeast.

The altercation reportedly began over an electrical installation at the rented residence of the three women. Dust from the work allegedly fell into the couple’s home downstairs, leading to an argument that escalated into verbal abuse. In the video, Singh and Jain are heard using slurs such as “momo” and making defamatory allegations, including claims that the women ran a massage parlour and were sex workers. Jain is also heard invoking her husband’s family background during the confrontation.

The women are seen protesting the insults in the presence of police personnel. Following the backlash, Delhi Police registered an FIR under sections related to outraging the modesty of a woman, criminal intimidation, and promoting enmity between different groups.

Political leaders promise strict action

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta met the affected women and said strict action would be taken. “There is absolutely no place for hatred, discrimination, intimidation, or racial abuse in Delhi,” she stated.

Union Minister for Development of the Northeastern Region Pema Khandu was also informed of the matter, and the Centre sought immediate action from the Delhi Police, assuring that the accused would be dealt with swiftly.

Apology rejected by many on social media

Speaking to ANI, Harsh Singh said he and his wife were “ashamed” and claimed the remarks were made in the “heat of the moment". He appealed against “media trials” and said they would accept any punishment awarded by the judiciary. However, many social media users rejected the apology, arguing that the comments reflected deeper prejudice rather than momentary anger.

The incident has once again spotlighted allegations of racial harassment faced by people from the Northeast in various parts of the country, with leaders and activists calling for stronger safeguards and stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination laws.
