An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Himachal Pradesh late on Friday night, triggering panic in several parts of the state as residents rushed out of their homes after feeling the tremors.
According to the meteorological office, the earthquake occurred at 10.04 pm and had a depth of 5 km. The epicentre was located near Dhar Godoi in Kangra district, close to the Kangra-Chamba border and about 40 km from Dharamsala.
Tremors felt in multiple districts
The quake was felt across Kangra, Chamba and adjoining districts of Himachal Pradesh. Residents in Dharamsala and nearby areas reported strong tremors that prompted many people to leave their homes and gather in open spaces as a precaution.

Officials said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property from any part of the state.
The earthquake also sent tremors across neighbouring regions, including Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and Haryana, according to reports.

Residents recall the shaking
Among those who experienced the quake was Chandigarh resident Baldev Chand, who lives on the second floor of a three-storey building.
"The tremors lasted only for a few seconds," he told NDTV.
The brief shaking was enough to alert residents across several cities, with many taking to social media to share their experiences shortly after the earthquake struck.

High-risk seismic zone
The affected districts of Kangra and Chamba fall under Seismic Zone 5, which is categorised as a high-damage risk zone. The region has a history of seismic activity and is considered among the most earthquake-prone areas in the country.
Authorities continued to monitor the situation through the night, while local officials remained on alert. As of now, no reports of injuries or structural damage have been received.
