For the first time, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has opened its Toshakhana collection to the public, allowing people to bid for diplomatic gifts and souvenirs received by government officials during official visits and engagements abroad.

The e-auction, which began on June 8, will continue until June 30 and includes nearly 300 ceremonial and collectible items with reserve prices starting at Rs 2,385, per a report by NDTV.

Rare diplomatic gifts up for bidding

Among the most sought-after items are two Rolex Yacht-Master watches, each carrying a reserve price of around Rs 16.5 lakh. The collection also includes a silver dagger from Oman, a sterling silver tea set made in London, an Apple MacBook Pro, silver decorative pieces and gold jewellery.

Officials told NDTV that the auction became possible after the implementation of the revised Toshakhana Rules, 2024, which now permit public participation.

The items on sale were received by serving government officials of the rank of Foreign Secretary and below during overseas assignments and official visits over several years.

Antique pieces attract strong response

Per NDTV, one of the major attractions in the auction has been an antique silver box from the 1980s. Originally designed as a luxury cigar or cigarette case, the item has reportedly attracted bids well above its reserve price.

The Rolex watches have also generated strong interest among bidders. However, officials said that gold jewellery from Kuwait, carrying a reserve price of around Rs 9.5 lakh, had not received any bids so far.

Another item drawing attention is a decorative silver box featuring gold-plated dragons and containing a 20-gram Swiss gold biscuit. According to officials, bidding for the item has already crossed its reserve price.

Proceeds to go to government fund

The auction is being organised by the Toshakhana Section of the MEA's Establishment Division. Officials told NDTV that reserve prices were fixed by a valuation committee, while packing and shipping charges were added to the assessed value.

Winning bidders will receive free delivery after the auction concludes on June 30.
