Kolkata to see more rain today as IMD issues thunderstorm warning for several Bengal districts

IMD has forecast more rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across Bengal, with heavy showers expected in North Bengal while Kolkata remains under an unsettled weather spell.

After a day of relentless lightning and heavy showers, Kolkata got a brief spell of sunshine on Friday morning. But the respite may not last long. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain and thunderstorms later in the day, with heavy rainfall likely in parts of North Bengal and no significant improvement in weather conditions across the state over the next few days.

The overnight rain may have eased, but the spell of unstable weather is not over yet.

No major improvement expected over the next few days

According to the IMD, Kolkata is likely to receive light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms on Friday. The weather pattern over Gangetic West Bengal is expected to remain largely unchanged over the next few days, with similar conditions continuing across South Bengal.

Gusty winds and thunderstorms likely in several districts

The weather office has issued a warning for gusty winds along with rain and thunderstorms in parts of North Bengal.

One or two places in Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur may witness winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph, accompanied by thunderstorms and rainfall.

Meanwhile, Murshidabad, Purulia, Bankura and Jhargram are also expected to receive light to moderate rain with thunderstorms. Winds in these districts could reach speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.

Heavy rain warning remains in place for North Bengal

North Bengal has been witnessing continuous spells of rain and storms for nearly a week, and the situation is unlikely to improve on Friday.

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, where rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm is likely. Heavy rain is also expected in North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur, according to the latest weather forecast.
