Meta has officially introduced Instagram Plus in India, marking a significant step in the company's growing subscription strategy across its social media platforms. Priced at ₹299 per month, the optional plan offers exclusive features that go beyond the standard Instagram experience, giving subscribers access to advanced Story tools, audience analytics and profile customisation options. The rollout follows Meta's broader global launch of Plus subscriptions for Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.

A subscription built around Stories and engagement

According to India Today, the biggest changes in Instagram Plus revolve around Stories. Subscribers can now see how many users rewatched their Stories, search through Story viewer lists and create multiple custom Story audiences instead of relying solely on the Close Friends feature. Another addition allows users to view Stories discreetly without appearing in the viewer list.

Meta has also introduced "Story Extend", which keeps Stories visible for 48 hours instead of the standard 24. Subscribers additionally receive a weekly "Story Spotlight" feature designed to increase visibility by placing Stories more prominently in followers' feeds. Animated "Super Hearts" have also been added to create more expressive interactions.

More ways to personalise your Instagram profile

According to India Today, beyond engagement tools, Instagram Plus focuses heavily on personalisation. Users can choose from exclusive app icons, access special fonts for profile bios and pin up to six posts at the top of their profile grid, doubling the current limit available to regular users.

Another notable feature allows subscribers to publish posts directly to their profiles and highlights without pushing them into followers' feeds. This gives users more flexibility in curating their profiles without affecting engagement metrics or overwhelming followers.

Who is Instagram Plus really for?

According to India Today, Meta has emphasised that Instagram Plus does not replace the free version of the app and that existing features will remain available to non-paying users. The company says the subscription is designed for users seeking greater control, deeper insights and enhanced self-expression rather than basic functionality.

For casual users, ₹299 a month may feel expensive for what are largely convenience and customisation features. However, for creators, influencers, community managers and users who rely heavily on Story engagement, the additional analytics and visibility tools could provide tangible value. Meta has also indicated that more exclusive features will be added to Instagram Plus in the coming months, suggesting the service may continue to evolve.
