England secured a convincing 115-run win over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The hosts wrapped up the contest on Day 4 after delivering a disciplined performance with both bat and ball in testing conditions.

England’s bowlers finish the job

Set a target of 254 runs, New Zealand entered the fourth day needing a determined batting effort but failed to build the partnerships required to challenge England. The visitors lost wickets at regular intervals as the home side’s pace attack maintained relentless pressure throughout the chase.

Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips attempted to steady the innings with fighting contributions, but England’s bowlers never allowed New Zealand to gain control. Every time the tourists showed signs of a recovery, England found a breakthrough to halt their progress.

Ollie Robinson was the standout performer with the ball on his return to the Test side. The seamer produced crucial spells across both innings, using accuracy and movement to trouble New Zealand’s batting lineup. His timely wickets played a major role in England’s success and helped tilt the match firmly in the hosts’ favour.

Hosts capitalize on key moments

Robinson received excellent support from Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, who complemented the attack with disciplined bowling. The trio adapted effectively to the Lord’s surface and consistently exploited the helpful conditions.

The Test proved challenging for batters from both sides, with bowlers dominating much of the contest. England, however, managed the difficult conditions better and made the most of important moments during the four-day encounter. Their ability to seize key opportunities ultimately created the difference between the two teams.

The victory continues England’s impressive record at Lord’s and gives Ben Stokes’ men a valuable advantage heading into the remainder of the series. Meanwhile, New Zealand will be left searching for improvements, particularly with the bat, after failing to produce a sustained challenge in the final innings.

With the opening Test now concluded, England carry momentum into the second match, while New Zealand face the task of regrouping quickly in a bid to level the series.
