Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday became the longest-serving head of a government in India, surpassing former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.

With 8,931 days in office, including his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister, Modi overtook Chamling's record of 8,930 days, Hindustan Times reported.

Modi first took oath as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001 and later became Prime Minister in 2014. He has since led his party to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024. He is also the first Prime Minister born after Independence.

Journey from Gujarat to national leadership

Reflecting on his journey, Modi said he assumed office in Gujarat during "very testing circumstances," when the state was dealing with a devastating earthquake, a super cyclone, droughts, and political instability, HT reported.

He said these challenges strengthened his resolve to rebuild the state. He also recalled his mother's advice to work for the poor and remain honest, saying those principles have guided his public life.

Focus on governance and development

The Prime Minister also referred to his nomination as the prime ministerial candidate in 2013, which he described as a period marked by a "crisis of trust and governance." He credited the people for giving his party a decisive mandate in the 2014 elections, HT reported.

He said that over the past 11 years, more than 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty and India has emerged as a key global economy. He added that government initiatives have focused on empowering women, youth, and farmers.

Expressing gratitude, Modi said serving the nation is the highest honour and reaffirmed his commitment to building a "Viksit Bharat" in line with constitutional values.
