Rajasthan Royals (RR) have moved swiftly to address a major setback ahead of IPL 2026, bringing in Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for injured England star Sam Curran. The late change comes as RR look to maintain squad balance despite losing a key overseas player just before the season.
Sam Curran ruled out with injury
RR were forced into a replacement after Sam Curran suffered a groin injury, ruling him out of IPL 2026. The England international was expected to play a crucial role in the side with his all-round abilities, contributing both as a middle-order batter and a reliable seam option. His absence creates a noticeable gap, especially in terms of balance and flexibility within the playing XI.
Dasun Shanaka joins as replacement
To fill that void, RR have signed Dasun Shanaka, a seasoned T20 all-rounder and former Sri Lanka captain. Shanaka is no stranger to franchise cricket and has prior IPL experience, having previously joined Gujarat Titans as a replacement player. His inclusion brings in a player capable of handling pressure situations and contributing in multiple departments.
Shanaka’s biggest strength lies in his finishing ability with the bat. Known for his power-hitting in the death overs, he can accelerate the scoring rate when needed. Additionally, he offers a few overs of medium pace, giving RR an extra bowling option. While he may not replicate Curran’s left-arm angle, Shanaka’s versatility and leadership experience add depth to the squad.

This move underlines Rajasthan Royals’ focus on maintaining a well-rounded squad. By opting for a like-for-like all-rounder replacement, RR ensure their team combination remains largely unaffected. Shanaka’s adaptability could prove crucial as the team navigates the long and demanding IPL season.
