Several parts of Delhi woke up to light rain and thunderstorms on Monday morning as weather conditions turned active across the capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) initially issued a yellow alert for large parts of south Delhi around 7 am before upgrading it to a red alert for most areas of the city at about 8.20 am.
In its weather update, the IMD said, “A fresh intense convective cloudmass moving southeastwards across Rohtak is likely to affect most places of Delhi with very light/light rain and thunderstorm/lightning/strong winds 60-70kmph gusting to 80kmph after an hour.”

Red alert for multiple districts
The red alert covers north, northwest, northeast, central, east and parts of southeast, west and New Delhi, along with all areas of Shahdara. An orange alert has also been issued for most parts of southwest and south Delhi and the southern pockets of New Delhi.
The weather department further stated that light rain accompanied by thunderstorms could affect several parts of the city, including Bawana, Rajouri Garden, Patel Nagar, Safdarjung, Lodi Road, Buddha Jayanti Park, President House, Rajeev Chowk, ITO, Kalkaji and Tughlakabad within the next few hours.

Rainfall recorded across parts of Delhi
According to IMD data, Palam recorded the highest rainfall between 5.30 am and 8.30 am on Monday, receiving 1.3 mm of rain. Chattarpur received 1 mm, while Pitampura and Pusa recorded 0.5 mm each during the same period.
Ayanagar recorded 0.6 mm of rainfall between Sunday evening and Monday morning, while Lodi Road reported only trace amounts. No significant rainfall was recorded at other weather stations until 8:30 am.

The IMD has forecast additional spells of very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning later on Monday. Similar weather activity is expected on Tuesday afternoon and evening, with another round of rain forecast for Saturday.

Even with intermittent rainfall, temperatures are expected to rise through the week. The maximum temperature is forecast to remain between 38 degree Celsius and 40 degrees on Monday and could climb to 42 degree Celsius to 44 degree Celsius by Saturday.
Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 135 at 9 am on Monday, and continued rainfall could help improve air quality in the coming days.
