'Scientific curiosity drives our nation forward': PM Modi pays tribute to CV Raman on National Science Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks about how the Raman Effect transformed India’s status in global scientific research.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the nation on National Science Day, stressing how curiosity, research and innovation drive the nation forward. Observed every year on February 28, the day commemorates Sir CV Raman's discovery of the Raman Effect, an achievement that gave India global stature in the field of science.

Honouring a historic scientific milestone

While paying homage to Sir CV Raman’s contributions, Prime Minister Modi talked about how the Raman Effect transformed India’s status in global scientific research. This groundbreaking phenomenon, for which Sir CV Raman received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930, is considered one of the greatest achievements in Indian scientific history.

"Today, on National Science Day, we celebrate the spirit of research, innovation and scientific curiosity that drives our nation forward.

This day commemorates the groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir CV Raman. This discovery placed Indian research firmly on the global map," PM Modi said.

National Science Day serves as a reminder of the importance of scientific thinking and encourages young minds to pursue research and innovation.

In a post on X, the PM reiterated the commitment of the government to strengthen scientific infrastructure and support the next generation of innovators. He emphasised the significance of good research infrastructure and actively encouraging more young people to get involved in science and technology.

"We reaffirm our resolve to empower our youth, strengthen research ecosystems and harness science and technology for national development and global good," he added.

PM Modi also shared a verse from ancient Indian scriptures, which underlined that when science and knowledge come together, it is able to unlock potential and bring growth, creativity, and solve challenges facing humanity.



Theme highlights role of women in science

The theme for the National Science Day, to be celebrated this year, is “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat." The event, conducted by the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, is to be held at Vigyan Bhawan.

The theme is focused on the progress of science in the context of the goal for Viksit Bharat, while also paying tribute to the achievements of women in the field of science, research, and innovation in the country.

The National Science Day will begin with National Science Day lectures by the Principal Scientific Adviser, Professor Ajay K Sood, where the topics will be discussed by Shubha V Iyengar, K Balasubramanian, and Shashi S Vempati, covering indigenous aerospace and defense technologies, critical materials and direct to mobile broadcasting, among others.
