Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has predicted a tight finish in the IPL 2026 playoff race and named five teams he believes are leading the battle for the top four spots. Speaking after Kolkata Knight Riders’ big win over Delhi Capitals, Ashwin said Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders currently look like the strongest playoff contenders.
Ashwin names top playoff contenders
Ashwin explained that the points table remains extremely close and every remaining match could change the qualification scenario. He believes momentum in the final phase of the tournament will play a major role in deciding which teams reach the playoffs.\

The former India spinner also said that consistency under pressure will be the biggest factor during the final weeks of the league stage. According to him, the teams handling crucial moments better are likely to secure qualification.
CSK faces a must-win situation
Ashwin also discussed the Chennai Super Kings’ difficult situation. According to him, CSK can no longer afford any slip-ups if they want to stay alive in the tournament. He said the five-time champions must win all four of their remaining league matches instead of depending on results from other teams.

Ashwin further added that even 16 points may not guarantee qualification this season because net run rate could become the deciding factor between multiple teams. He also pointed out that Chennai may need favourable results from rival franchises to improve their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
A major focus of Ashwin’s analysis was CSK’s upcoming clashes against Lucknow Super Giants. He described those matches as season-defining contests for Chennai and said wins there could completely revive their playoff hopes in IPL 2026.
