Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Punjab Kings by 33 runs in a crucial IPL 2026 encounter on Wednesday. After a shaky start to the season, SRH have now completed a remarkable turnaround and climbed to the top of the points table. Punjab, meanwhile, suffered their third consecutive defeat despite a sensational century from Cooper Connolly.
Ishan and Klaasen power Hyderabad to massive total
Batting first, Hyderabad started aggressively through Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. The opening duo added 54 runs in quick time before Abhishek departed after scoring 35 off just 13 deliveries. Head also continued the attacking approach with a brisk 38 from 19 balls.

The momentum was then carried forward brilliantly by Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. The pair stitched together an 88-run partnership that completely shifted the match in Hyderabad’s favour. Ishan played an elegant knock of 55 from 32 balls before getting dismissed, while Klaasen remained unbeaten till the final delivery of the innings.
The South African wicketkeeper-batter smashed 69 runs off 43 balls with controlled aggression. Nitish Kumar Reddy added valuable late runs with an unbeaten 29 as Hyderabad finished with a daunting 235 for 4.
Connolly’s century not enough as Punjab collapse again
Punjab’s chase never truly recovered after a disastrous start. Priyanshu Arya and Prabhsimran Singh were dismissed with only four runs on the board, while skipper Shreyas Iyer managed just five. Reduced to 23 for 3, Punjab found themselves under immense pressure.
Cooper Connolly attempted a stunning rescue act almost single-handedly. The Australian batter counterattacked fearlessly and completed a brilliant century in the final over. He remained unbeaten on 107 from 59 balls, smashing seven fours and eight sixes.

However, lack of support from the other end proved costly. Marcus Stoinis scored 28, while Suryavanshi Shej added 25, but neither could convert their starts. Pat Cummins and Shivang Kumar picked up two wickets each to seal an important win for Hyderabad.
With this victory, SRH moved to 14 points from 11 matches, while Punjab slipped to second place with 13 points. The playoff race has now become even more competitive.
