The Mumbai Indians’ season has gone from difficult to deeply uncertain, and the injury cloud over Rohit Sharma has only made matters worse. With just two wins from seven matches and sitting near the bottom of the table, MI were hoping for a timely boost. Rohit, who picked up a hamstring injury against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 12, has already missed three games. Though he returned to net practice ahead of the clash with Sunrisers Hyderabad, he wasn’t deemed match-fit.
Rohit Sharma’s return is delayed further
Captain Hardik Pandya confirmed at the toss that Rohit still needs more time. According to him, the veteran opener is “trying hard,” but hasn’t yet reached the fitness benchmark required for competitive play. As things stand, Rohit is expected to miss at least two more matches.

If recovery progresses without setbacks, Rohit could return around May 10 against RCB or May 14 versus Punjab Kings. However, with his timeline being repeatedly pushed back, there’s growing speculation that MI might take a more cautious approach rather than rushing him in.
More injury concerns for MI
The problems don’t end with Rohit. South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock also missed the SRH match due to a wrist injury, further weakening the top order. Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner had already been ruled out earlier. These setbacks forced MI to reshuffle their playing XI, handing opportunities to Ryan Rickelton and Robin Minz.
With injuries piling up and key players unavailable, the Mumbai Indians are struggling to find momentum. Rohit’s absence, in particular, continues to leave a leadership and batting void at the top. Whether his return can revive MI’s campaign now depends not just on timing, but also on how quickly he can regain full match fitness.
