Virat Kohli struck a steady 64th IPL half-century to anchor Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad. After Devdutt Padikkal’s explosive start, Kohli ensured control with a measured 50 off 33 balls, guiding RCB comfortably towards the 202 targets in a largely one-sided contest.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru began their IPL 2026 campaign in commanding fashion, chasing down a stiff 202-run target against Sunrisers Hyderabad with ease and finishing the job in just 15.4 overs. The defending champions looked in complete control throughout, underlining why they remain one of the teams to beat this season.

Kohli, Padikkal lead dominant chase as champions continue momentum

Devdutt Padikkal set the tone with a fluent 61, combining elegance with intent, while Virat Kohli anchored the chase to perfection with an unbeaten 69. The duo ensured there were no hiccups in the pursuit, as RCB barely broke a sweat despite the imposing total on the board.

Earlier, SRH had posted a competitive 201/9, powered by Ishan Kishan’s explosive 80 off 38 balls. Aniket Verma provided the late flourish with a quickfire 43 off 18 deliveries, giving SRH hope of a strong start to their campaign. However, RCB’s bowling unit kept things in check at key moments, with Jacob Duffy returning impressive figures of 3/22, while Phil Salt’s sharp work in the field added to SRH’s troubles.

Having won the toss, RCB opted to bowl first on a batting-friendly surface at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, a venue hosting top-level cricket after a long gap. The decision paid off handsomely as they executed their plans efficiently both with the ball and in the field.

With the IPL returning for its 19th season, the excitement was palpable, and RCB ensured they made an immediate statement. A year after finally lifting their maiden title, they look just as balanced and dangerous- sending a clear message that they are not ready to give up their crown anytime soon.
