World Liver Day 2026 is observed on April 19 every year to spread awareness about liver health and its importance.
World Liver Day 2026 is being observed to spread awareness about liver health and the importance of lifestyle choices. Doctors warn that poor daily habits can silently damage the liver over time without showing early symptoms.
Fatty liver disease is becoming more common due to unhealthy food, lack of exercise and stress. Experts say early prevention is the best way to avoid long-term complications and serious liver damage in the future.
A health expert has shared six simple lifestyle habits that can help protect the liver. These changes include diet control, reducing alcohol, managing stress, improving sleep and staying hydrated regularly.

Fatty liver risks, symptoms, and diagnosis explained by expert
In a conversation to Hindustan Times, pathologist Dr Ramesh Kinha, Chief Operating Officer at Thyrocare Technologies Ltd, he said people should pay attention to their lifestyle, or they may be at risk of Metabolically Active Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), earlier known as Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), which is mainly caused by a sedentary lifestyle.
Fatty liver is dangerous because it usually has no clear symptoms, so it is often detected very late. The doctor warned that it can cause abdominal discomfort and tiredness, and if not treated, it may lead to serious liver damage, cirrhosis, and even heart-related risks.
Even if it shows no symptoms, it is important to know the warning signs. These include weakness, pain or discomfort on the upper right side of the stomach, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), swelling in the legs, and fluid build-up in the abdomen.
Fatty liver can be diagnosed through LFT or Liver Function Test, ultrasound, MRI, or CT scan to detect fat in the liver, and a liver biopsy is done to check how much damage has occurred.
Healthy diet
A balanced diet is essential for liver health. The doctor recommends a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and healthy fats like omega-3. It also helps in reducing fat build-up in the liver.
Limit alcohol
Alcohol can severely damage liver function over time. The doctor explains how it disrupts fat metabolism and increases inflammation, making it one of the biggest risk factors for fatty liver disease. Doctor said to Hindustan Times,âAlcohol consumption reduces fat breakdown, raises fat synthesis, hinders fat export, disrupting the normal rhythm of fat metabolism in the liver. The liver is known to cause a breakdown of alcohol into toxic byproducts,â the pathologist described what alcohol does to your liver. â Alcohol causes the liver to release fats into the bloodstream as very low-density lipoproteins. This results in the accumulation of triglycerides within the liver cells. Alcohol can also cause oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver.â
Exercise daily
The doctor said regular exercise is one of the best ways to prevent fatty liver. He recommended doing at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. Activities like brisk walking, cycling, strength training, or yoga can help reduce fat in the liver, improve metabolism, lower stress, and boost blood circulation.
He also explained that intense workouts are not necessary, but consistency is important. Even simple daily exercise can protect liver health. He added that losing about 5 to 10 percent of body weight can greatly reduce fat build-up in the liver and improve overall health.
Stress management
Managing stress is important for overall health. As per Hindustan Times report, the doctor says, âChronic stress is a major contributor to metabolic disorders, fatty liver disease, and weight gain. It is very important to manage stress levels through techniques such as deep breathing and meditation, engaging in recreational activities or hobbies, spending quality time in the midst of nature, and getting enough sleep.â

Proper hydration
Water plays a key role in flushing toxins from the body. The doctor advises drinking 8-10 glasses of water daily and avoiding sugary drinks, while suggesting green tea or herbal tea in moderation. âWater helps in flushing out toxins from the body, lowers the symptoms of fatty liver, and boosts digestion,â Dr Kinha said to Hindustan Times, highlighting one of its main roles in supporting liver health.
Healthy sleep routine
Sleeping on time helps regulate body metabolism and reduces stress on the liver. Poor sleep patterns can increase the risk of fatty liver and other metabolic disorders over time.
Experts say fatty liver often develops silently, making prevention extremely important. Small daily changes in diet, sleep and hydration can significantly improve liver health and reduce future risks.
Following these six habits can help maintain a healthy liver and prevent long-term complications. World Liver Day 2026 reminds people that consistent lifestyle correction is the key to better health and disease prevention.
