Bihar, one of the most spiritually rich regions in India, is home to ancient temples, monasteries, rivers, and historic landmarks. Among its lesser-known yet significant sites is Gurpa Hill, a hidden gem located about 26 kilometres northeast of Bodh Gaya in the Gaya district.
Also known as Gurupadagiri or Kukkutapāda, Gurpa Hill rises sharply from the Gangetic plains and is considered one of the tallest peaks in the region. Its rugged terrain and isolated presence give it a striking appearance, attracting both pilgrims and history enthusiasts.
What makes Gurpa Hill spiritually significant
Gurpa Hill holds deep importance in Buddhist tradition due to its association with Mahākāśyapa, one of the foremost disciples of Gautama Buddha. According to belief, he chose this hill as the place for his final meditation.
It is widely believed that Mahākāśyapa entered a deep meditative state here and attained Nirvana, symbolising liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth. This belief makes Gurpa Hill an important pilgrimage destination and part of Bihar’s broader Buddhist circuit, which includes Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, and Nalanda.

Surrounded by hills and greenery, the site has a serene atmosphere. The presence of caves, small shrines, and meditation spots further reflects its long-standing association with spiritual practice.
The legend of the hidden meditation
One of the most enduring legends associated with Gurpa Hill describes a miraculous event. It is said that the rocks of the hill opened to allow Mahākāśyapa to enter during his final meditation, and then closed, enclosing him within the mountain.
This story is closely linked to another belief that Mahākāśyapa remains in meditation, awaiting the arrival of Maitreya, the future Buddha. According to tradition, when Maitreya appears, he will come to Gurpa Hill, awaken Mahākāśyapa, and receive the robe of Gautama Buddha.

A challenging yet spiritual climb
Reaching the top of Gurpa Hill requires a steep and uneven climb, often testing the endurance of visitors. Despite the difficulty, many pilgrims undertake the journey as an act of devotion and self-discipline.
At the summit, small shrines and meditation spaces offer a sense of peace and spiritual fulfilment. Devotees often visit during Buddhist festivals and special observances to meditate and seek inner calm.
For many, the belief that Mahākāśyapa continues to meditate within the hill makes Gurpa a living spiritual landmark, rooted in faith, legend, and centuries of devotion.
