The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a review meeting in August to assess the Indian men’s cricket team’s recent performances across the white-ball tours of Ireland, England and Zimbabwe. The discussions are also expected to cover the future of a few members of the support staff working under head coach Gautam Gambhir.

India endured a difficult start under new T20 captain Shreyas Iyer, losing the two-match series against Ireland 2-0 before suffering a 4-0 defeat in the five-match contest against England. However, the team bounced back against Zimbabwe, wrapping up the series with a game still left to play.

BCCI confirms performance review in August

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board will conduct the review next month. “We will hold the review meeting in August,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said.

The meeting was planned after India’s disappointing results during the Ireland and England tours. The board had earlier indicated that the discussions would focus on evaluating the team’s performances and identifying areas that need improvement.

Devajit Saikia calls it a “purely bad phase”

Following the defeats in Ireland and England, Saikia had stressed that the board was closely monitoring the team’s performances but did not view the slump as an unusual situation in international cricket.

“The BCCI is currently observing the performance of the Indian T20 team, which has not been up to the mark in the ongoing series against England. However, this is not something abnormal and can happen in international cricket. We consider it a purely bad phase,” Saikia said.

His remarks suggested that the review would be aimed at understanding the team’s struggles rather than reacting to a single stretch of poor results.

Sunil Gavaskar urges BCCI against extreme decisions

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has also weighed in on the upcoming review, urging the BCCI not to overreact despite the disappointing run.

“The BCCI is going to do a review of the defeat, and there are rumours that a few heads could roll. That would be an extreme step, for barely four months ago India were the world champions,” he wrote in Sportstar.

Gavaskar also pointed to technical shortcomings among Indian batters, particularly against short-pitched bowling.

“There’s been a lot of talk about how playing on flat batting pitches has spoiled the Indian batters. Even on the so-called flat pitches in the IPL, most of the Indian batters struggled against the short ball. That is more of a technical failing. With the weight on the front foot and the back foot locked, there is simply no transfer of weight to deal with a ball climbing towards the face,” Gavaskar added.

With the August review approaching, the BCCI is expected to examine both the team’s results and the support structure as it plans the next steps for India’s white-ball setup.
