A construction worker lost his life after a workplace accident at Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou on Friday, marking the first fatal incident since the club began redeveloping its iconic stadium in 2023. Authorities have launched an investigation into the tragedy, while Barcelona has expressed its condolences to the worker’s family.

Barcelona mourns on worker’s death

The deceased was a 54-year-old construction worker who suffered a fatal fall while working at the Camp Nou redevelopment site. Emergency medical teams and Catalan police responded to the incident, but the worker could not be saved.

Barcelona confirmed the tragedy in an official statement, offering its deepest sympathies to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues. Club president Joan Laporta also conveyed his condolences and assured the family of the club’s support during this difficult period. Construction work at the site was temporarily suspended as a mark of respect.

Investigation underway in CampNou

The fatal accident is the first reported death since the Camp Nou renovation project began in June 2023. Labour authorities and police have opened an investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether all workplace safety protocols were followed.

The redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou is part of Barcelona’s wider Espai Barça project. Once completed, the stadium is expected to accommodate around 105,000 spectators, making it one of the largest football venues in Europe. The project includes a new roof, upgraded seating, improved hospitality areas and modern facilities for supporters.

Barcelona has already begun reopening parts of the stadium while construction continues in phases, with the full redevelopment scheduled for completion in 2027.
