In the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has once again forced his way into national selection conversations. His stunning spell against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium—3 wickets for just 5 runs in 3 overs—was not just impactful but symbolic. On a pitch tilted in favour of batters, his economy of 1.67 stood out as an exhibition of control, skill, and experience. The performance has sparked a familiar question: should he be recalled to Team India?

Dominance in powerplay underlines consistency

What made Bhuvneshwar’s spell exceptional was its timing. Bowling in the powerplay, traditionally a phase dominated by aggressive batting, he dismantled the opposition early and shifted momentum. This season, he has picked up 14 wickets in just 8 matches, maintaining a solid economy of 7.61 despite increasingly batting-friendly conditions.

While emerging names like Anshul Kamboj and Prince Yadav have drawn attention, Bhuvneshwar’s numbers remain superior. Since debuting in 2011, he has consistently delivered, often maintaining an economy between 7 and 8 while crossing double-digit wickets in most seasons. That level of sustained performance over more than a decade is rare in T20 cricket.

Strong case for India's return backed by numbers

Bhuvneshwar last represented India in 2022 against New Zealand, but his IPL performances since then have been hard to ignore: 16 wickets in 2023, 11 in 2024, 17 in 2025, and already 14 this season. With selectors still searching for a dependable partner for Jasprit Bumrah, his name naturally re-enters the discussion.

He now has 20 three-wicket hauls in IPL history, with only Bumrah ahead among Indian pacers. Notably, since 2023, he leads all Indian bowlers in powerplay wickets with 32. At a time when experienced pacers like Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Deepak Chahar have struggled with economy, Bhuvneshwar’s control stands out.

In an era where IPL performances heavily influence national selection, his case is built not on nostalgia but on consistent output. If performance remains the primary benchmark, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to Team India appears less like a debate—and more like a logical next step.
