NASA has announced the names of the astronauts chosen for the upcoming Artemis III mission, which will pave the way for future expeditions on the moon.

The astronauts will comprise astronauts with vast experience, international participation, and rookies as well.

Artemis III is one of the many missions in the Artemis series of NASA and has been scheduled to take off by 2027. The main task of the astronauts will be to perform a complicated docking maneuver using SpaceX and Blue Origin spacecrafts.

A diverse team for a critical mission

The commander of the mission would be the seasoned astronaut Randy Bresnik, who has spent almost 150 days in space on three spaceflight missions. With experience in serving as a retired Colonel of the US Marine Corps and a skilled test pilot, Bresnik has completed a total of more than 7,000 flight hours flying 95 types of planes.

Joining him as pilot is Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency. Parmitano becomes the first ESA astronaut assigned to an Artemis mission, marking another milestone in international cooperation under NASA's lunar exploration programme.

Parmitano has previously flown two space missions and is among Europe's most experienced astronauts.

Record holder and first-time flyer

Mission Specialist Frank Rubio brings a unique distinction to the crew. In 2023, Rubio set the record for the longest continuous spaceflight by a US astronaut after spending 371 days aboard the International Space Station.

Originally scheduled for a shorter mission, Rubio's stay was extended after technical problems affected the spacecraft designated for his return journey. Beyond his astronaut credentials, Rubio is also a board-certified family physician and flight surgeon.

The fourth member of the crew, Andre Douglas, will make his first journey into space during Artemis III.

Selected by NASA in 2021, Douglas has an extensive engineering background, including multiple advanced degrees and a doctorate in systems engineering. Before joining the astronaut corps, he worked with the US Coast Guard and later contributed to several NASA-related projects through the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Artemis programme gains momentum

Artemis mission will take humans back to the Moon and help build up capabilities for future trips to Mars.

NASA believes that the Artemis III mission will be important for testing the technological systems and operational procedures for future lunar exploration. It will also highlight stronger cooperation between the US and its partner countries.
