Jammu & Kashmir have been one of the standout performers in this Ranji Trophy season. After defeating heavyweights like Mumbai and Delhi, the team has grabbed widespread attention. The buzz around fast bowler Aaqib Nabi had already begun in the 2024–25 season. The 28-year-old pacer has played a major role in J&K’s recent rise in domestic cricket. There’s now growing speculation: Will Aaqib Nabi be seen in the IPL? More importantly, will he turn out for five-time champions Mumbai Indians? The hints suggest so because Aaqib was spotted at a Mumbai Indians' trial ahead of the December auction.

Are Mumbai Indians set to sign Aaqib Nabi?

Aaqib Nabi finished the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy as the second-highest wicket-taker with 44 wickets. He has carried that form into the current season too, picking up 28 wickets in five matches so far.

He claimed five-wicket hauls each against Mumbai and Delhi and took 10 wickets in the match against Rajasthan. Understandably, several IPL franchises have their eyes on him going into the auction.

Arjun Tendulkar was recently traded to Lucknow Super Giants by the Mumbai Indians, and Aaqib can be considered an apt replacement for him. Even with Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Hardik Pandya in their ranks, Mumbai might consider Aaqib for a much-needed pace attack.

Last season, young pacer Ashwani Kumar made an impression for Mumbai. This year, all attention seems to be on Aaqib and Mumbai could secure him for a comparatively modest price.

However, Mumbai are not the only team interested. Reports say a number of other franchises, including Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals, too, have kept the J&K pacer in their radar. Aaqib has already bowled in the nets for Delhi and Sunrisers Hyderabad, adding to his growing experience.
