West Indies fast bowler Justin Greaves produced a spell for the record books on Day 3 of the first Test against Pakistan in Trinidad, becoming the first cricketer in Test history to bowl five successive wicket maidens.

The remarkable achievement came during a devastating spell that stretched across either side of the lunch break. Greaves finished with outstanding figures of 5/27 from 11 overs, including six maiden overs, as Pakistan were dismissed for 282.

In the process, the 32-year-old also claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket. His achievement surpassed the previous record of four consecutive wicket maidens, set by former England pacer Stuart Broad against South Africa in Johannesburg in January 2016.

Pakistan looked firmly in control after reaching 244/3, with Shan Masood leading the charge after completing a century.

The momentum shifted dramatically once Greaves broke the partnership by dismissing Masood. From there, the West Indies seamer ripped through the lower order, removing Mohammad Rizwan, Aamer Jamal, Ali Usman and Mohammad Abbas during his memorable spell.

“When I came on captain Roston Chase just said ‘continue to be disciplined in what you are doing’ and to see if I can get some wickets for the team,” Greaves said.

The pacer said the conditions rewarded consistent bowling and was delighted to register his first five-wicket haul in the longest format. “The ball nipped around and I got some reward. Anytime I get the ball in hand the team looks to me to be that solid player for them (and) try to dig us out of situations. To get five wickets for the first time in Test cricket, I’m really happy, but there’s still a lot of work to do in the game,” he further added.

Pakistan strike back before stumps

Despite Greaves’ record-breaking effort, Pakistan responded strongly late in the day. The visitors reduced the West Indies to 126/7 by stumps, leaving the hosts with an overall lead of 155 runs heading into the next day’s play.

While the match remained evenly poised, Day 3 belonged to Justin Greaves, whose extraordinary spell earned him a unique place in Test cricket history with a record no bowler had achieved before.
