After being out of the ground since October 2025 due to injury, Shreyas Iyer is set to return to international cricket. He has been included in India’s squad for the ODI series against New Zealand, putting an end to speculation over his fitness and future.

Shreyas missed the recent ODI series against South Africa but signalled his readiness through a strong performance in domestic cricket. Playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 82 runs off 53 balls, underlining that he has recovered fully from his injury.

Strong domestic return

Mumbai were under pressure early in their match against Himachal Pradesh, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) and Sarfaraz Khan (21) cheaply. Shreyas then stabilised the innings, adding an 82-run partnership with Musheer Khan, who scored 73 off 51 balls.

After Musheer’s dismissal, Shreyas continued to anchor the innings, sharing a 65-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav. He was eventually dismissed for 82, narrowly missing out on a century. His innings included 10 fours and three sixes.

The knock is being seen as a clear indication that Shreyas is match-fit and ready for international duty.

Concerns for others

While Shreyas impressed, Mumbai captain Suryakumar Yadav had a modest outing, scoring 24 off 18 balls. His lack of big scores in recent matches may be a concern for the Indian team management.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who has also returned from injury and is part of the ODI squad against New Zealand, failed to make an impact in domestic cricket. Playing for Punjab, he was dismissed for 11 off 12 balls, raising questions ahead of the upcoming series.
