After India’s historic T20 World Cup triumph on Sunday, attention quickly shifted to the future of the team’s senior stars. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma already having retired from the format following the 2024 T20 World Cup victory, speculation began around the next phase of India’s T20 leadership group. Among the names in focus was Suryakumar Yadav, one of India’s most explosive batters in the shortest format.
For the past one-and-a-half to two years, Suryakumar had not consistently displayed the dominant batting rhythm that made him a global T20 sensation. The World Cup therefore became something of a crucial test for the right-hander, both in terms of form and his role in the evolving Indian side.
Despite the scrutiny, Suryakumar played a part in India’s successful campaign as the team lifted yet another T20 World Cup title. Following the victory, the Mumbai batter addressed the media and made it clear that retirement was far from his mind. Instead, he revealed that his ambitions are still growing, with a major global goal now firmly on his radar.
Surya dismisses retirement speculation
Suryakumar Yadav made it clear that he has no plans to step away from international cricket anytime soon. Even after achieving the ultimate success with India, the batter said his hunger to win more trophies remains as strong as ever.

Speaking to journalists after the final, Suryakumar reflected on the team’s journey through the tournament. He admitted that the campaign did not begin in the ideal manner but praised the collective effort that helped India eventually lift the trophy.
“This tour over the past month was wonderful. The journey didn’t start the way we wanted, but the success we achieved as a team in the end is definitely special,” he said.
Olympics and next T20 World Cup on Surya’s radar
Looking ahead, Suryakumar revealed that his next major ambition is to win a gold medal for India at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket is set to feature in the T20 format.
Alongside that dream, he also has his sights set firmly on the next T20 World Cup. According to the Indian batter, he wants to continue contributing to the team and help India achieve further success in global tournaments.
A different approach from the 2024 triumph
Suryakumar also highlighted how India’s strategy in this World Cup was different from the approach that brought them success in 2024. The team, he said, adopted a new brand of cricket tailored to conditions and expectations while playing in front of home supporters.
The batter added that he hopes to keep performing at the highest level for the next few years and continue delivering impactful cricket for India until at least the 2028–29 period.
