The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand has generated immense excitement among cricket fans. However, weather interruptions remain a possibility in any outdoor sporting event, especially in high-stakes tournaments. To avoid a washed-out title clash, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has put specific playing conditions in place. These rules outline how the match will proceed if rain interrupts play, whether the overs will be reduced, and what happens if the game cannot be completed on the scheduled day. The objective is to ensure that the final produces a clear champion while giving both teams a fair opportunity to compete.
Reserve day and match completion rules
Unlike league-stage matches, the T20 World Cup final has a designated reserve day. If rain or other interruptions prevent the match from being completed on the scheduled day, the remaining portion of the game will continue on the reserve day from the exact point where it stopped.
However, the priority of match officials will be to finish the match on the original day itself. Extra time is allocated to handle delays, and if necessary, the number of overs may be reduced using the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method to produce a result.
Minimum overs requirement and tie-break rules
For knockout matches like the semi-finals and the final, at least 10 overs per side must be played for a valid result to be declared. This is higher than the five-over minimum required in group-stage matches. If the match begins but cannot be completed on the scheduled day, it resumes on the reserve day rather than restarting.

However, if weather disruptions continue and a result still cannot be achieved even after the reserve day, both teams may be declared joint winners. In case the scores are level at the end of the match, a Super Over will be used to determine the winner, with additional Super Overs played if required until a clear result is achieved.
