Andrea Pirlo has confirmed that he is no longer being considered for the Italy national team coaching job after political criticism surrounding his commercial partnership with a Russian betting company brought his candidacy to an end.

The sponsorship drew criticism from several Italian politicians, who argued that such an association was not appropriate for someone seeking to lead the national team, particularly as Italy continues to support Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.

Pirlo rejected suggestions that his commercial agreement carried any political meaning and stressed that the partnership was strictly related to his professional work.

Addressing the controversy, he said, “The professional collaboration that is the subject of recent controversy came about as part of my working experience in the United Arab Emirates and is exclusively of a commercial and sporting nature.”

The former midfielder also dismissed claims that the sponsorship reflected his political views. “Attributing a political significance to that collaboration means attributing beliefs to me that I have never expressed and don’t belong to me,” he added. 

Pirlo also expressed disappointment that what began as a football-related opportunity had become overshadowed by a broader political debate.

Italy coaching search takes another turn

Pirlo’s exit leaves the Italian Football Federation searching once again for a new head coach at a crucial stage for the national team. He was viewed as one of several candidates rather than the clear favourite. His coaching career has included spells with Juventus and Sampdoria, and he is currently in charge of Dubai United.
