East Bengal increased the tempo after falling behind and created several opportunities to level the score. Dani Ramírez came closest when his effort struck the outside of the post, while Mohammed Rashid was denied by goalkeeper Vishal Kaith, who produced a series of crucial saves in the closing stages.

Mohun Bagan defended resolutely to protect their slender advantage and secure all three points in their opening Group B fixture of the Durand Cup. The victory also gave new head coach Panagiotis Dilimperis a winning start in his first competitive match in charge of the club.

The contest marked the first time in the 135-year history of the Durand Cup that the tournament began with the iconic Kolkata derby. While Mohun Bagan celebrated a perfect start to the domestic season, East Bengal were left to reflect on missed chances despite an improved second-half display.
