The Indian government has taken strict action against X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, over allegations that its AI chatbot Grok is being used to create obscene and indecent images of women. On Friday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a strong warning to the platform.
Complaint against Grok AI
The issue came to light after Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote to Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. In her letter, she alleged that Grok AI is being misused to alter normal photographs of women and turn them into nude or obscene images. She described this as a serious form of defamation and sexual harassment of women in the digital space.

Following the complaint, the Centre sent a strict notice to X. The government has directed the platform to remove all objectionable and sexually explicit content within 72 hours.
Warning on legal action
Apart from removing the images, X has also been asked to make changes to its algorithm to prevent such misuse in the future. The platform must submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) explaining the steps it has taken to address the issue.

The government has clearly warned that failure to follow these instructions will result in X losing its 'safe harbour' protection under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act. If that happens, criminal cases could be filed directly against X and its officials under the POCSO Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
