Mohammedan Sporting Club have suffered another major setback ahead of the Indian Super League, with FIFA set to impose an indefinite transfer ban on the club.
The latest ban stems from a complaint filed by Brazilian footballer Franca, who featured for Mohammedan last season. The player approached FIFA over non-receipt of full contractual payments, prompting the world body to intervene and move towards restricting the club from registering new players.
The recent ban was lifted at a high cost
Only a few months ago, Mohammedan had managed to lift a previous transfer ban after spending several crores of rupees. Following that clearance, the club strengthened its squad with Indian signings such as Padam Chhetri, Fardin Ali Molla, Gaurav Bora, Adingra, Remsanga, and Israfil.

With the fresh ban now looming, Mohammedan are unlikely to sign foreign players for the upcoming ISL season. As things stand, they are expected to compete with an all-Indian squad under the coaching of Mehrajuddin, with pre-season training likely to begin on January 25.
Other ISL clubs cut costs
Several ISL teams are also reshaping their squads to reduce expenditure. FC Goa released midfielder Iker Guarrotxena, Kerala Blasters parted ways with Juan Rodriguez, while John Toral exited Mumbai City FC.

Jamshedpur FC, despite having five foreign players, have opted against appointing a foreign coach and will continue under Steven Dias. Inter Kashi face logistical issues due to a lack of training grounds in and around Kolkata and currently have only two foreign players. Meanwhile, Bengaluru FC and Odisha FC are also without confirmed coaches and may turn to Indian options.
Amid the uncertainty, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal FC, Delhi Sporting Club, and Punjab FC are understood to be fully prepared for the upcoming ISL season.
