Defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant battled both fierce resistance and adverse weather to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over NorthEast United FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on April 19, 2026. An early strike from Robson proved decisive as the Mariners showcased defensive resilience to hold onto their lead in a rain-disrupted encounter. The win propelled Mohun Bagan to the top of the ISL standings with 20 points from nine matches, while NorthEast United remained near the bottom with just seven points.

Early breakthrough sets the tone

Mohun Bagan wasted no time asserting dominance, starting on the front foot despite the challenging surface. Within five minutes, a slick attacking sequence carved open the NorthEast defence. Initiated by Liston Colaco and carried forward by Sahal Abdul Samad, the move culminated in Robson arriving perfectly inside the box to slot home with precision.

The early goal allowed the visitors to dictate tempo in the first half, with attacking threats coming from Jamie Maclaren, Jason Cummings, and Sahal. However, NorthEast goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh ensured the deficit did not widen, producing a series of composed saves. As rain intensified, maintaining fluid passing became increasingly difficult, forcing both teams to adapt their approach.

Kaith and defence stand tall under pressure

As conditions worsened, NorthEast United gradually found rhythm and began applying pressure. Their best first-half opportunity came through Parthib Gogoi, but Vishal Kaith reacted sharply to deny the forward with a well-timed intervention.

The second half, delayed due to heavy rainfall, turned into a test of defensive discipline. NorthEast pushed forward with urgency, attempting long-range efforts through Macarton Nickson and Thoi Singh, but Kaith remained composed between the posts. The decisive moments arrived late in stoppage time when substitute Ankith Padmanabhan nearly equalised, only for Kaith to produce a crucial save. The rebound sparked chaos, but Mehtab Singh emerged as the hero in defence, making successive goal-saving interventions to deny Jairo Samperio and Andy Rodríguez.

In the end, Mohun Bagan’s organization at the back, combined with Robson’s early finish, ensured they walked away with all three points from a challenging night in Guwahati.
