Speculation surrounding Ajit Agarkar ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup has now been put to rest, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) set to extend his tenure. Although his current contract runs until June, the board is understood to be preparing a fresh deal, largely influenced by India’s recent success in limited-overs formats. The move signals continuity in leadership as India builds towards the next major ICC cycle.

However, while Agarkar appears set for stability, uncertainty clouds the future of Suryakumar Yadav. Despite being part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning setup, the right-hander has struggled for consistency with the bat. A BCCI source was quoted as saying to TOI,“Iyer last played a T20I in 2023. He has not been part of the current setup. It’s a big call to bring him back and hand him the captaincy straightaway.”

The source also added, “The focus has shifted towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, which has given selectors breathing space to plan for a T20I leadership transition.”

What is the roadmap?

The upcoming T20 series against England and Ireland, scheduled for June-July after the IPL, is expected to be decisive. According to a BCCI official, Suryakumar will continue to lead the side in England, but his long-term place is far from secure. His performances in these series will likely determine whether he remains in the team’s plans heading towards the 2028 Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle.

Age is another factor working against him. By the time of the 2028 Olympics, Suryakumar will be 38, prompting debate over whether the team should invest in younger talent instead. The emergence of promising players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi has further intensified the competition for spots in India’s white-ball squads.

A senior board official emphasised that leadership alone will not guarantee selection. Consistent batting performances remain the key criterion. With rising competition and a packed international calendar ahead, Suryakumar now faces a crucial phase in his career where every innings could shape his future in Indian cricket.
