Brazil have suffered a significant setback ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with defender Wesley being ruled out of the tournament because of a thigh injury sustained during a recent friendly against Egypt. The injury forced the AS Roma full-back to withdraw from Carlo Ancelotti’s squad just days before Brazil’s opening match of the competition.
Wesley’s World Cup dream cut short
Wesley picked up a muscle injury in his left thigh during Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Egypt. The 22-year-old was forced off early in the match and was visibly emotional as he left the pitch. Subsequent medical examinations confirmed the severity of the problem, ending his hopes of featuring at the World Cup.

The setback is particularly challenging for Brazil because Wesley was the only specialist right-back named in Ancelotti’s original 26-man squad. His absence leaves a gap in the defensive setup at a crucial stage of preparations. The Brazilian Football Confederation expressed disappointment over the injury and reiterated that Wesley remains an important figure for the national team moving forward.
Ederson was drafted in as a replacement
In response to Wesley’s withdrawal, Brazil has called up Atalanta midfielder Ederson to join the World Cup squad. Although Ederson plays in midfield, his inclusion adds depth and experience to the group ahead of the tournament.

Ancelotti may now rely on versatile defenders such as Danilo and Roger Ibanez to provide cover on the right side of defence. Despite the injury blow, the Brazilian coach has expressed confidence in the strength and adaptability of his squad.
Brazil begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in Group C, where they will face Morocco, Haiti and Scotland. The five-time champions remain among the favourites for the title, but Wesley’s absence represents an early challenge as they prepare for the tournament.
