India’s Nirupama Devi endured a disappointing outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after failing to register a total in the women’s 63kg weightlifting event. The debutant managed just one successful lift from six attempts as her hopes of winning a medal came to an abrupt end.

Nirupama Devi’s clean and jerk struggles end campaign

The 25-year-old had a difficult start in the snatch competition. She missed her opening lift of 93kg before successfully clearing the same weight on her second attempt. However, she failed to improve her mark in the remaining attempts and finished fifth after the snatch with a best lift of 93kg.

Needing a strong clean and jerk performance to move into medal contention, Nirupama opened at 123kg. She managed to clean the weight on all three attempts but failed to complete the jerk each time, leaving her without a valid lift in the discipline. As a result, she was classified as Did Not Finish (DNF) and did not record a total.

Charron wins gold with Games record

Canada’s Olympic champion Maude Charron claimed the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record total of 232kg, lifting 102kg in the snatch and 130kg in the clean and jerk. England’s Sarah Davies Smale secured the silver medal, while Nauru’s Femily-Crystie Notte finished with bronze.

Despite Nirupama’s setback, India’s weightlifting contingent has enjoyed a productive campaign at the Commonwealth Games, collecting medals across multiple categories. While the young lifter’s debut ended in disappointment, her experience on the international stage is expected to aid her development as she looks to bounce back in future competitions.
