Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a cash reward of ₹30 lakh for weightlifter Raja Muthupandi after he won a silver medal in the men’s 65kg event at the 2026 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Glasgow. The announcement came as recognition of the athlete’s impressive international achievement and his contribution to Indian weightlifting.

Raja Muthupandi secures silver with strong overall lift

Representing India, Raja Muthupandi finished second with a total lift of 286kg. He lifted 126kg in the snatch and followed it up with 160kg in the clean and jerk to claim the silver medal.

The Tamil Nadu lifter missed his final snatch attempt at 129kg but stayed in contention with a composed performance in the clean and jerk. He successfully cleared 158kg and 160kg before failing to lift 170kg on his final attempt. His combined effort was enough to secure a place on the podium.
