Hypertension is a notable risk factor that can lead to heart attacks and kidney disease. It has impacted approximately 1.3 billion adults around the globe. It usually remains untreated because hypertension does not come with any symptoms, so the people suffering from it usually do not spend time going to a doctor until it's very serious.

How does Apple Watch track hypertension?

Hypertension notification in the Apple Watch will employ data that is gathered by the optical heart sensor. It will analyse how a user’s blood vessels will respond to the beats of the heart. The algorithm will work passively and will review the data collected over 30 days. The analysis will help the Apple Watch notify users if it happens to detects any hypertension. The notifications will provide valuable insights to users about their health just by wearing an Apple Watch. The notifications are expected to urge users to take care of their health and act accordingly.

How can hypertension detection help users?

According to Newsroom, Professor Dorairaj Prabhakaran, the Centre for Chronic Disease Control’s executive director and the World Heart Federation’s president-elect, mentioned, “Hypertension is one of the most widespread yet under-diagnosed health conditions. Integrating opportunistic detection into a device people already wear daily will democratize access for early detection and help people have more informed conversations with their doctors.” Apple’s health features and hypertension notifications are based on continuous scientific systems. The revolutionary feature was built with advanced machine learning and training data from multiple studies, which spanned over 100,000 participants, and its performance was validated in a clinical study of over 2,000 participants.

The users who receive a hypertension notification can log their blood pressure for seven days using a third-party blood pressure cuff and share their results with the doctor. The users are also asked to stay consistent with the latest American Heart Association guidelines for the treatment and management of hypertension.
